The author presents a vignette of preservice teachers developing performance assessments in a partnership with a mentor. This article would also be valuable as a framework for professional development. The author provides a framework of templates and rubrics to help guide the teacher's toward an effective assessment. The author also shares the assessments created by the preservice teachers. This article discusses the research supporting the use of performance assessments and the the National Science Education Standards (NRC 1996) assessment philosophy that the primary purpose of assessment should be to support the learning of important science.
