Splash, Flash, Crank, Slide, Alive! Interactive Standards-Based Science Experiences for Grades PreK–2 at Discovery Center

by: Bonnie T. Ervin and Kim Cleary Sadler

Discovery Center at Murfree Springs, a hands-on museum and environmental education center, has created a science tour for grades preK-2, called “Splash, Flash, Crank, Slide, Alive Tour,” which is based on the National Science Education Standards. The Tour is designed to support students' natural curiosity in scientific exploration, and gives students the opportunity to learn skills in context of each exhibit's unique features. Facilitated by experienced staff, individual classes of students rotate in small groups through a series of hands-on learning centers. Pre- and post-activity packets for teachers help reinforce student learning. Results from evaluation surveys, as well as the survey instrument itself, are included.
