A Teacher's Perspective: Learning a Second Language

by: Ana Vaisenstein, Sumner Elementary School, Boston Public Schools

In “Learning a Second Language,” page 107, Ellen Bialystok explains the ways in which reading a science text in a second language makes learning more challenging. She explains that language is the core of science learning because it “is the primary medium through which scientific concepts are understood, constructed, and expressed.” She talks about some of the challenges of learning through spoken language but focuses primarily on the obstacles students face when they are expected to learn science through texts. Ana Vaisenstein, a former first-grade teacher in a two-way bilingual school, shares her perspective.
