Description

In their essay, “Programs for Teaching English Language Learners,” page 129, Fred Genesee and Donna Christian take an in-depth look at some of the most frequently used educational approaches for teaching students who are learning English. They describe two distinct types of programs: those that promote proficiency in English as quickly as possible and those that develop students’ proficiency in their first language while simultaneously promoting their acquisition of English. Mary Rizzuto, a science curriculum instructional specialist for the Needham Public Schools in Needham, Massachusetts, shares her perspective.
