By designing and conducting their own field studies, students learn science in a meaningful context, apply scientific knowledge to local environmental issues, use resources within and around the school, and link classroom science to real-world issues. As students collect their field data, they organize, analyze, and make sense of the patterns they observe. The field work gives meaning to doing science, as well as to the science concepts used to make sense of the world.
