This series of lessons looks at water and river-shed basins through the use of online GIS programs that are free and easily available. The main GIS portal has changed its URL to http://nationalmap.gov/viewer.html . Students start with a physical model to help them understand what a watershed is and then use a series of maps to find them on a global, regional, and local scale. This lesson is written in such a manner as it could be used from middle school through undergraduate courses that look at erosion, surface water, hydrology and could be modified to focus more closely on any one of those or other specific topics. Sample student worksheets are provided.
