I'm sharing this book chapter with my principal because the information is valid and can be integral to improving our professional learning communities. In Chapter 4 there is a graph that is directed at how we use data. I wholeheartedly agree that data was never intended to be used as a tool to punish teachers with. We have to move from the mindset of low scores equal the teacher's fault. There are other factors to consider. I believe more teachers would embrace data that was interpreted in a way to show them where they could improve their teaching skills. Along with those discrepancies, teachers could then search and attend professional development that would improve their skills. I do agree with using data throughout the year. However, some school districts interpret data use as an outside test that is given 3 or more times a year that entails a week away from instruction to complete testing. I think there are data tools that are easily and readily acceptable already in place and more that can easily be accessed online. This chapter is packed with really good information that can help educators peel back the many layers of education reform and tailor it to fit the needs of the students AND teachers. If teachers would implement the 5E model in all subject areas, I believe their would be greater student engagement and students that would be more intrinsically motivated to take ownership of their learning.
