The famous New York Yankee catcher Yogi Berra once said, “You can observe a lot just by watching.” This activity helps strengthen students’ skills in a fundamental aspect of mathematics and science: visual observation. Students carefully examine and sketch a variety of objects, then analyze the sketches for shapes, patterns, and relationships. Students investigate the concept of “field of view” and learn how it can vary depending on distance from the object(s) being observed. As a Going Further activity, students incorporate careful observation, field of view, and shape/pattern recognition into a painting.
