Inquiry: A Challenge for Changing the Teaching of Science in Connecticut

by: Holly Harrick
edited by: Robert E. Yager

A catalyst for inquiry gaining its rightful place of importance in Connecticut public education was the State Board of Education’s 2004 adoption of the Core Science Curriculum Framework (CSDE 2004). The framework includes a set of inquiry standards that are based on the National Science Education Standards and the subsequent addendum to the standards, Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards. The science framework clearly established that Connecticut recognized the increasing importance of science, technology, and mathematics—process skills as well as content—in preparing students for their futures in the 21st century and for the continuing economic success of the state. To that end, the Connecticut Science Center (CSC) began to respond to this daunting challenge of preparing elementary teachers to use inquiry-based learning in their schools.
