Promoting Inquiry With Preservice Elementary Teachers Through a Science Content Course

by: Thomas R. Lord and Holly J. Travis
edited by: Robert E. Yager

Inquiry science teaching is effective at all levels, from elementary classes to higher education. It is important, therefore, that preservice education majors who will be teaching science understand the differences between inquiry instruction and instruction other than inquiry. Teacher education courses taught in the nation’s colleges and universities must meet the challenge of developing this understanding for present science teacher education majors. The program described in this chapter takes place with preservice elementary education majors in their life science content course. The course is focused on the role humans play in the natural world.
