Developing a Relationship With Science Through Authentic Inquiry

by: Paula A. Magee and Natalie S. Barman
edited by: Robert E. Yager

In this chapter, the authors first describe the theoretical framework they have developed for understanding and developing their work as teachers. They start by articulating their own understanding of teaching and learning. Following this discussion, they present details about the context of their course and describe four teaching strategies they have used to move from a theoretical perspective of inquiry to a practical enactment. While they do include detailed descriptions of the strategies, it is important to realize that it is the holistic implementation of these strategies—together with their theoretical perspectives on teaching and learning—that they believe makes using the strategies meaningful for students. They include evidence from student work that documents the impact of these innovations on students’ understanding of scientific inquiry and their own development as learners of science.
