This probe is designed to determine what students mean when they hear the words speed, velocity, and motion. Middle school is when the word velocity is introduced and often the students do not have a clear idea of what the words means. The use of this probe will help the teacher understand what the student’s ideas of the meaning of the words speed, velocity, and motion are before formally using the words in instruction. It is a great way to begin a unit dealing with motion.
