I've begun planning an elective science course for my alternative high school students. Nanotechnology/Nanoscience is one field that is extremely new and appears in the news frequently enough to intrigue learners that have grown stale to other science topics. "Intro to Nanotechnology" free book chapter was well written and gave me the information I needed to make the decision of pursuing this area with my students. 5E model was utilized with engaging inquiry activities that could easily be conducted in an independent learning situation and with a small group of HS students. I especially welcome the research articles/student readings that will encourage my kids to "reach" and "stretch" their independent analysis and provide time relevant "Argumentaiton & Evaluation" discussions.

As a fan of the 5 E lesson development, I was very appreciative of the author's 5E presentation of the lesson. For each chapter, there is an engage, explore, explain, extend and evaluate activity ready for the classroom. In this first chapter, the idea of nanotechnology is introduced. The author presents excerpts from “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom,” a December 1959 lecture by Richard P. Feynman. The 1959 lecture was discussing the possibilities of what we now call nanotechnology. The lesson ties this together with an extension activity of nanotechnology current events.
