Police have learned some additional information about the suspects involved in this case, and their relationship to the victim. In Part I of the performance assessment, Police have mixed up the infared spectroscopy (IR Spectra) for each of the chemicals found in the basement in the baby food jars. Students are expected to look at the given IR Spectra and match the spectra to the three chemicals: acetaminophen, caffeine, and aspirin. Students use their knowledge of functional groups and IR Spectra to match each of the mixed up spectra to the appropriate chemical. In Part II of this assessment, the students determine if caffeine can be extracted from coffee and if so, how much could be extracted from the amount the police found in the basement. Students will need to figure out how much caffeine can be extracted from the amount of coffee grounds found in Gladys V. and Gerald V.’s basement. Students, in Part III, look at the chromatography papers for each of the known chemicals: acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. In Part IV, police found a drug log book in the basement that they think to test to see if they match the pen ink in the drug log book and to see if there was a drug connection between any of the victims and suspects.
