While I was looking for winter lesson planning materials I found is outstanding probe by Page Keeley. In this probe, students examine why the days are shorter in the winter. Students are presented with several explanations of why the days are shorter and they must select the best reason and justify why they picked this response. Included with the probe are teacher notes that explain the science behind shorter days, links to the standards, and ideas for how to administer and present the probe based on grade level. This is an excellent probe to elicit student ideas about the shortening days. I look forward to using this with my students as we approach the winter solstice.

Always worth the money

Page Keeley and Cary Sneider do not disappoint with this probe. It is thoughtful, hits the concept and student feedback from the probe will inform the teacher.
