Doing Calculations the Right Way

by: Norman LaFave

Observing a student trying to solve a word problem can often be a frustrating experience for the teacher. The secret to getting students to learn processes is to set their perspective. They need to look at problems differently than their initial viewpoints: as a puzzle, not a problem; as a challenge, not a roadblock; and as a project, not a problem.

The procedure presented in this chapter gives the student a complete and general procedural approach for executing any calculation from the beginning to the end: The Method. This general procedure can be integrated with subprocedures that are specific to different types of problems to form a repeatable process for solution of problems of a given class. With practice, The Method has been found to be an effective tool for improving a student’s problem-solving prowess and increasing the student’s confidence during the process.
