The rewards of creating nonfiction text sets are great for both teachers and students. Teachers the authors have worked with say that this approach has increased their understanding of nonfiction text and enhanced their awareness of the great diversity within the broad category of nonfiction text. They also say that it has diversified the types of texts they use in their instruction. And, as you’ll see in Part II of this book, nonfiction text sets are perfectly suited to support inquiry-based instruction. In this chapter, the authors describe the different types of nonfiction text as well as how teachers can use these types of books in their classroom.
