Working With the IEP Team

by: Lori A. Howard and Elizabeth A. Potts

The science teacher is an important member of the IEP team—bringing unique knowledge and perspective—and communication with the rest of the team will lead to the best possible outcome for students with disabilities in advanced science classes. This chapter shares ideas about working with the IEP team, outlining who is on the team, and how collaborating with the IEP team will lead to a more fulfilling experience for science teachers, as well as students with disabilities. The chapter also provides information on transition plans. The goal of the transition plan is to think ahead to what the student will do after high school and set goals related to training, education, employment, and if appropriate, independent living.
