NSTA e-Mentors Begin Pilot Work
This spring, 40 science and mathematics teachers from California and Montana joined an innovative NSTA pilot project to mentor beginning teachers via distance learning and on-site activities. This project, titled “e-Mentoring for Student Success” (eMSS), is funded through the National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnership program. The first cohort of “e-mentors” is working closely with staff at NSTA; the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz; and Montana State University to design and pilot activities that the mentors will carry out with early career teachers next autumn.

Each mentor will work online with one or two beginning teachers per year, focusing on the new teachers’ instructional skills, science knowledge, and ability to navigate in a new school and community. Most activities will take place on the web, providing beginning teachers with around-the-clock access to a network of other beginning teachers, experienced instructors, and scientists. The goal is to produce beginning teachers who not only will survive, but also who will eventually grow into leadership positions in their districts.

NSTA will eventually recruit and train mentors, school administrators, and scientists to support beginning teachers in more than 30 states. Look for updates about the eMSS project in the coming months.


NSTA Honors ExxonMobil with Distinguished Partner Award for Company's Commitment to Science Education
NSTA presented its Distinguished Partnership Award to the ExxonMobil Foundation at the NSTA National Convention in Philadelphia. The award pays tribute to those organizations that have made a steadfast commitment to the improvement and enhancement of science education in partnership with NSTA. ExxonMobil has partnered with NSTA on various programs over the years and has contributed more than $6 million to the Building a Presence for Science program. Managed by NSTA and funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation since 1996, Building a Presence for Science has helped science teachers implement state and national science education standards in their schools by providing a network for sharing information and practices about effective science teaching. Engage Your Preservice Teachers in Science—Start an NSTA Student Chapter Today!
