NSTA Executive Director to Appear on National Science Education Broadcast

NSTA Executive Director Gerald Wheeler has been invited to participate in a special broadcast on science and math education as part of “Education News Parents Can Use,” a nationally televised satellite broadcast series sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education.

The live broadcast titled “Math and Science: Preparing for the Future” is scheduled for 8 to 9 p.m. EST on March 16, 2004, and will be part of the Department of Education’s Summit on Science. Dr. Wheeler will join Dr. Susan Sclafani, Department of Education Assistant Secretary & Counselor to the Secretary; and Shiela Byrd with the American Diploma Project, Achieve, Inc. to discuss a host of issues, including No Child Left Behind; high-quality science and math education; what the research tells us about math and science education; and how parents can encourage their children to learn science “outside the classroom.” In addition, the presentation will include a special taped conversation between Education Secretary Rod Paige and Dr. William Haseltine, chairman and CEO of Human Genome Sciences.

FDA/NSTA Food Science Program Registration Extended to March 19

Attention middle level and high school science teachers—looking for a unique professional development opportunity this summer? Then check out the FDA/NSTA Professional Development Program in Food Science.

Selected middle level and high school science educators will have an opportunity to be involved in this multidimensional professional development program that starts with a summer 2004 workshop and is followed by a participant-led workshop for colleagues during the following academic year. The summer workshops bring 25 middle level and 25 high school teachers to Washington, D.C. for an all-expense paid professional development program. The participants visit USDA & FDA labs, food-processing facilities, agricultural centers and the microbiology labs at the University of Maryland for an intense, week-long workshop where they learn the entire process of food science from farm to table. Publish to Your Peers, Pump up Your Professional Portfolio in NSTA Periodicals

NSTA’s well rounded publishing program is structured to allow science educators to share ideas with thousands of your peers at the appropriate grade level. The award-winning content of our grade-specific member journals reflects the needs of our audience of classroom teachers, science supervisors and administrators, teacher educators, and parents. Science Scope, the NSTA member journal for those who teach science in grades 6-9, is currently looking for submissions on the following topics for the next school year's editorial calendar:

  • History and Nature of Science
  • Hands-on Earth Science Lab Activities (especially Earth History)
  • Getting the Most Out of Inquiry Activities and Hands-on Labs (Techniques for teaching higher-order thinking skills and link concepts/processes to everyday situations)
  • At-Home Lab Activities and Family Science Programs (reinforcing class learning and involving families)

For its first-ever summer issue, The Science Teacher is seeking manuscripts that describe new and creative ideas for the secondary science classroom. Manuscripts should provide worthwhile ideas and practical help for teachers as they reflect on past practices and plans for the new school year.

Particularly relevant articles might include startup activities used to engage students right from the beginning of the new school year. Ideas that require advance planning in the summer, collection of materials, or culturing living organisms will connect well with this theme. TST also seeks articles related to summertime activities such as "Science at the Beach"… perhaps activities with sand, sunscreen investigations, water science, and so on.  Manuscripts should be submitted by March 25, 2004

The Journal of College Science Teaching, the NSTA member journal for teachers of undergraduate science, is seeking manuscripts that describe the best college-level ideas on and experiences with undergraduate science courses, particularly those for the nonscience major. All deadlines are open, and we are specifically seeking papers on the following topics:

  • Teaching Versus Research
  • Using Technology in the Classroom
  • Teaching in the Community College
  • Professional Development
  • Unique Programs or Departmental Set-Ups.
