Issues Position Statement on Scientific Inquiry
the power that scientific inquiry has in helping students understand
science content, NSTA has issued a position statement that sets
forth key recommendations on three central aspects of inquiry: the
use of scientific inquiry as a teaching approach, students' abilities
to do scientific inquiry, and students' understanding of scientific
inquiry. NSTA recommends that all K-16 teachers embrace scientific
inquiry and is committed to helping educators make it the centerpiece

College Science Educators-You Can be Published in NSTA's Handbook
of College Science Teaching: Theory, Research, and Practice
NSTA is developing
a resource book for college science teachers and welcomes manuscript
proposals on contemporary topics of college science teaching. Each
manuscript will represent a chapter of the book and will consist
of quantitative or qualitative research studies; research summaries
in specific subjects such as biology, chemistry, Earth and space
sciences, or physics; or generalized studies about most or all of
science learning. Well-documented position papers, descriptions
of innovative teaching and learning methods, meta-analyses, and
historical perspectives are also encouraged. Authors will receive
a modest honorarium and full academic and intellectual credit for
their published contributions. Proposals are due January 5, 2005.

Master of Life Sciences Classes Start Dec. 6; Registration Open
are now being accepted for Term II admission to the University of
Maryland Web-based Master of Life Sciences program. Classes begin
December. 6. Created specifically for practicing middle and high
school science teachers, the Master of Life Sciences program is
a 30-credit interdisciplinary course of study with concentrations
in biology and chemistry. Four 10-week terms are offered each year.
Human reproductive biology, emerging infectious diseases, pharmaceutical
chemistry, human physiology, chemistry and application of electrochemical
cells and principles of paleobiology will be offered in the upcoming
