U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will be addressing more than 2,000 science educators at NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education in New Orleans. Duncan will discuss the various provisions of the education reform strategy that he and President Obama will be pursuing this year. In a recent speech, President Obama outlined the five pillars of a comprehensive education reform:

  1. Investing in early childhood initiatives
  2. Encouraging better state standards and assessments
  3. Recruiting, preparing, and rewarding outstanding teachers
  4. Increasing charter schools and extending the school day
  5. Providing higher education (including technical training) to all Americans.

Secretary Duncan will speak from 9:00 to 9:30 am on Friday, March 20, 2009, at the National Conference to be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

NSTA is launching a new program to support the creation of the John Glenn Center for Science Education. NSTA will unveil the Buy a Brick … Build a Legacy program at the national conference in New Orleans. The program gives donors at every level of giving the opportunity for lasting recognition of their support for the John Glenn Center for Science Education.

The program is a wonderful opportunity for NSTA members and other individuals to honor or memorialize loved ones, family members, teachers, mentors, or others. And, of course, all gifts will help create an important new resource for science educators everywhere.

Donors to the Buy a Brick … Build a Legacy program can choose customized text to be engraved on bricks and pavers that will be featured in prominent locations in the Glenn Center. Companies and other organizations can even have a logo engraved on a paver.

This week NSTA is offering reduced prices on Glenn Center bricks to launch the program during the NSTA National Conference in New Orleans, March 16–22. Three options are available as part of the program for gifts of $50 (normally $75), $250 (normally $275), or $350 (normally $375). Visit www.nsta.org/buyabrick to participate.
