Majorities Oppose Cuts to Federal Education Spending

With the threat of sequestration and the expiration of the Bush era tax cuts looming ahead for the lame duck Congress, a number of key options for reducing the deficit have been floated, including cuts to education. Research conducted last month by the Pew Research Center finds that the majority of Americans surveyed for the poll (75%) do not want to reduce federal education spending and 61% oppose cuts in funding for federal students loans. A majority of respondents also rejected reduced funding to scientific research. Key results of the poll are below; for more information, click here.

Afterschool Programs and STEM: Tell Us What You Think

Quality afterschool science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs provide excellent opportunities to get students engaged with hands-on, inquiry-based learning science and technology activities. Evaluations of afterschool programs have shown students who participate in STEM-focused afterschool programs are more interested in STEM, have a higher degree of STEM-based knowledge and skills, and often pursue STEM careers at a higher rate. Web Seminar and eCYBERMISSION Rescheduled for November 8

Register now for NSTA’s November 8 rescheduled free web seminar, “Teach STEM Skills in Your Classroom Through eCYBERMISSION.”Attendees will learn about the basic elements of the competition, choosing a topic, writing a problem statement, data collection, and analyzing and drawing conclusions. Prospective team advisors are encouraged to attend.

eCYBERMISSION is an online, collaborative, learning competition designed to inspire grades 6–9 students to develop solutions to real-world challenges in their local communities. Student teams have the opportunity to win state, regional and national awards with four winning teams awarded up to $8,000 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds (value at maturity).

Registration for the 2012–2013 competition is open until December 14. To participate, students must be U.S. citizens enrolled at any U.S.-based public, private, or home school, Department of State school, or a Department of State education activity. A team advisor must be a teacher, coach, counselor, or leader in a youth organization and at least 21 years of age.

We’re giving super gifts to the team advisor with the most individual students registered by December 14; a $600 gift certificate for Vernier Probeware for their classroom. Additionally, every team advisor with at least 20 registered students is eligible to be entered into a drawing where the winner will receive Vernier Probeware valued at $600. Announcing the 1st International Teacher-Scientist Partnership Conference

February 13–14, 2013 – Boston, Massachusetts

The Science & Health Education Partnership at UC San Francisco and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) are pleased to announce the first International Teacher-Scientist Partnership Conference. The conference, funded by the National Science Foundation (Grant DUE-1247936), will be held February 13–14, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts, just before the annual AAAS Annual Meeting.

This conference is designed for anyone involved or interested in teacher-scientist partnerships, such as teachers, scientists, engineers, partnership program coordinators/specialists, administrators, and evaluators. The program will include sessions of interest to both new and experienced stakeholders in the field and will include a mix of keynote speakers, panel sessions, workshops, and networking time. Conference topics will include: partnership models, getting started in partnerships, recruitment, evaluation, dissemination and more. Join others from around the world for two days of discussions, workshops, and presentations as we build community and share expertise in this rapidly growing field.

Proposal Submission: We are currently soliciting proposals for workshops and sessions. Proposals are due Monday, December 3, 2012. The final program will be announced in January 2013.

Poster Session: Join us at AAAS on Friday, February 15, and share your work in the teacher-scientist field with AAAS attendees. This session is an opportunity to inform a broad range of STEM professionals about the merits and benefits of teacher-scientist partnerships. Poster submissions are due Monday, January 21, 2013.

Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking is Topic of Tuesday’s Web Seminar in Preparation for NGSS

Using mathematics and computational thinkingis the topic of the next web seminar in a series of eight on the scientific and engineering practices described in A Framework for K–12 Science Education. It will be held on Tuesday, November 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Framework, published by the National Research Council (NRC), describes the major practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas that all students should be familiar with by the end of high school and is being used to guide the development of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Teachers will learn more about

  • The importance of mathematics and computation as fundamental tools for representing physical variables and their relationships;
  • Tow tools are used for a range of tasks, including constructing simulations; statistically analyzing data; and recognizing, expressing, and applying quantitative relationships;
  • Mathematical and computational approaches that enable scientists and engineers to predict the behavior of systems and test the validity of such predictions;
  • Why statistical methods are frequently used to identify significant patterns and establish correlational relationships.

Attend all eight seminars or just one. Graduate credit is offered through Shippensburg University.

4th World Conference on Science and Technology Education Next Fall in Malaysia—Deadline for Papers Dec. 31

Live Science, Love Learning, Create Change is the theme for the 4th World Conference on Science and Technology Education in 2013 (WorldSTE2013), scheduled for September 29 to October 3, 2013, on Borneo Island in the city of Kuching, Malaysia. More than 2,000 educators from all over the world are expected to attend the five day international conference, which will be hosted by the International Council of Association for Science Education (ICASE), UNESCO, and the Global Research and Intelligence Network (GRAIN). International experts in science and technology education will cover a range of science and technology education topics, over 100 exhibitions will be on display, and delegates will have the chance to experience the unique culture of Kuching, Malaysia.
