Ear-tickling poems and eye-tricking photography lead the reader to attempt to solve the mystery of “What is it?” This third book in the What in the Wild? series takes readers on a remarkable tour of the world of nature. It earned a place as an NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2011 because of its potential for reader inquiry and the way it is bound to spark constructivist dialogue.

Big, clean type asks questions about the full-page, clear photos on opposite pages. Some of the text is typeset in interesting, theme-related patterns, adding to the fascination and creativity of the presentation. What is in that gall? That nest? It's easy to imagine an enthusiastic circle of listeners getting excited by the challenge of identifying what's in the large photographs.

Young "nature detectives" or teachers/mentors can unfold the pages to reveal more photos that answer the question and a more advanced reading selection—ideal for teachers or mentors to extend the discussion. There are resources for further reading, including websites and books.
