Caterpillars are amazingly diverse in form and coloring, and they are endlessly fascinating to children. Although adults are often unaware of them, they are all around us in our yards and parks. Part of a series called Earlylight, this series is designed to illustrate the wonders of caterpillars. The author hopes readers will "marvel at how these crawly creatures will someday take to the sky as graceful moths and butterflies.”

The book begins with a poem by the author about caterpillars. Each line is illustrated with color photographs and text. For example, the line "caterpillars brave" shows the scary face of a European puss moth caterpillar and the line "caterpillars rearing" shows a great hairstreak caterpillar being protected by ants.

Every page is filled with color photographs of caterpillars, moths, and butterflies. The book includes a fun quiz, a match game, information about the anatomy of a caterpillar, a glossary, references for further information, a list of scientific/common names, and an index. This is a great picture book that can be enjoyed both by adults and children. The text is clear and readable for young readers as well. It could also be used as a simple identification guide to some common caterpillars found by budding young scientists.
