Here's a great way to dispel the misconception that living things lie dormant during the winter months! This beautifully illustrated volume shows a family's observations in a snowy forest. Over the snow, the family skis past browsing deer and scratching fox. What's under that snowy winter blanket? A tunneling shrew, snoozing bullfrogs, scratching mice.

The book includes lyric text in large print—ideal for reading aloud. The illustrations are detailed and invite rich discussion. The book ends with a child burrowing into his own comfortable blanket, dreaming of the natural world.

As a primary read–aloud, this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Trade Book will encourage both observation and a deeper understanding of life cycles and habitats. Each animal might be the subject of further research, while the simple–yet–detailed illustrations might inspire journaling by students.
