"Can you guess whose eggs these are?" begins every other double–page spread in this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Trade Book. Some are the size of a pea, others as big as seven inches. Each opposing page provides clues to read aloud, and then the next spread an illustration of the animal and its life cycle.

The format is ideal for whole–class inquiry and subsequent discussions of birds, their life cycles and habitats. From penguins to cactus wrens, eggs reveal diversity and adaptations. The birds that emerge from them are amazing in their traits and their behaviors.

Teachers and mentors will love sharing this book with children, because it is such an obvious springboard to inquiry and investigation. While the reading level of the text will challenge even middle school readers, the book's structure and design will attract younger nascent ornithologists.
