Archive: Science Update: Underwater Sound in our National Marine Sanctuaries, June 2, 2022

SanctSound is a three-year project, managed by NOAA and the U.S. Navy, to better understand underwater sound within our national marine sanctuaries. The goal of the SanctSound project is to understand how sound varies in the ocean by collecting the same information in sanctuaries around the United States. SanctSound combines sound data with the other types of observations we make throughout the National Marine Sanctuary System in order to better understand and protect these special places. The SanctSound web portal allows users to explore the sonic features of each sanctuary, and to make comparisons among locations to better understand how similar or different they are from each other. Take a tour of this new portal and the new Ocean Sound and Impact of Noise Resource Collection.

All individuals receive a certificate of participation and 100 NSTA activity points for attending the live seminar and completing the end-of-program survey. A certificate of participation is not awarded for watching the recorded version of the program.

We invite you to register for upcoming web seminars at NSTA.

Below are comments from individuals who attended the seminar:

  • "I have always been curious about noise pollution especially in the ocean. I am excited they are collecting data on the subject."
  • "I love the different sounds and the information that was presented."
  • "The availability of data students could use and access for a lab was great. The VR videos would really appeal to students. I like that there are a lot of resources that teachers can review at their leisure."
  • "This was one of the most interesting, resource-packed seminar that I have attended in a few months. I enjoyed how the presenters had us think about what we can pick up by listening."

A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' account page for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
