In this problem, students explore how forces change the direction of motion of a spaceship moving between asteroids. They simulate the scenarios by using puffs of air delivered through straws to move balls through a maze made up of an “asteroid field” on a tabletop or taps on a hover soccer ball to move it through a maze on the floor. The same story can be applied to any two-dimensional motions where there is little friction, such as air hockey or ice skating. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Catalog of Problems, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Image Credits, and Index.
