In recent years, the value of using authentic assessments to evaluate student learning has been discussed at all levels. The use of authentic assessments, in the use of lesson plans, has proven to be a valuable tool for the evaluation of content mastery in preservice education classes. Not only do students feel that they are building a portfolio of useful ideas for their student teaching, they also demonstrate knowledge of the important features of major topics through the development of inquiry-based 5-E lessons.
