Average Speed

by: Michael Horton

This lab is not an inquiry activity but will help students understand the meaning of average velocity. Students do not easily understand from a textbook that an object’s velocity changes over a period of acceleration. They have difficulty understanding why the final velocity of an object starting from rest is double the average velocity when accelerating at a constant rate. Seeing objects accelerate from rest will help students visualize this concept and will help them solve book problems correctly. Drawing the graphs also will help them visualize the process. The graphs also set up students for an understanding of terminal velocity.
