Exploring the Role of Technology-Based Simulations in Science Assessment: The Calipers Project

by: Edys S. Quellmalz, Angela H. DeBarger, Geneva Haertel, Patricia Schank, Barbara C. Buckley, Janice Gobert, Paul Horwitz, and Carlos C. Ayala

In this chapter, the authors describe a project funded by the National Science Foundation, “Calipers: Using Stimulation to Assess Complex Science Learning.” This project is a two-year demonstration project that aims to use technology-supported “benchmark assessments” to bridge the gap between external summative assessments of principled design and high technical quality and curriculum-embedded formative assessments.
