Finders Keepers?: Who Owns the Dinosaur Bones?

by: Sami Kahn

In this lesson, suggested for grades 3-5, students learn how fossils provide clues about Earth’s past. After being introduced to the concept of fossils, they examine various objects to determine whether they are fossils. They then engage in a fossil bed excavation and an online simulation in which they replicate the work of paleontologists. Finally, they are introduced to a fossil controversy, based on the real dispute about ownership of the famous Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur skeleton nicknamed Sue. Students then determine and discuss their views on who should own fossil finds. Before beginning the lesson, we recommend reading Units I and IV, which are included in this book selection. A list of materials, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessments, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, About the Author, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
