This is one of the best probes in the Page Keely's formative assessment book. The activity can easily be adapted for instructional use and I have used it recently on an interactive board to great effect. It generates good discussion and the short response gives students a chance to express their first ideas about the concepts addressed, or return to as a point of refection and synthesis.
