Gliding Into Understanding

by: Patrick Brown

Chapters 6–9 share model lessons for putting the explore-before-explain mindset into practice using either a POE (Predict, Observe, and Explain) or 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) instructional sequence. This chapter offers a 5E lesson with Elaborate and Evaluate phases that place students in the role of scientists and asks them to carry out “next-step” investigations. The “next-step” investigations challenge students to build on what they learn during explorations and explanations and to apply what they have learned to deepen their understanding of important science process and content. Teacher background information, standards, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Author, Introduction, and Index.
