Scientists as Partners in K–12 Science: Engineering, Science, and Technology Careers

by: Craig Johnson

While scientific specialization has been responsible for many remarkable and rapid advances within scientific disciplines, this strength becomes a weakness when it comes time for members of various disciplines to cooperate. The Iowa Academy of Science fosters cooperation and encourages K–12 students to pursue careers in science and science-related fields through its membership, mission, and organizational structure. The membership of the Iowa Academy of Science includes scientists, science educators, graduate and undergraduate students, academic institutions, science-related organizations, and corporations. Through sponsorship of the Iowa Junior Academy of Science, middle and high school students are brought into the Academy. Encouraging more students to pursue careers in science or science related disciplines thrives on cooperation among scientists and science interests in the public and private sectors. This chapter provides detailed information about the Academy.
