Sweet Genes in Corn (Teacher Edition)

This chapter begins with consideration of sugars made by the plant during photosynthesis and the movement of those sugars within the plant by diffusion along concentration gradients and by other processes. By exploring the genetic basis of sweet corn, students learn about the biochemical pathway that leads to conversion of sugars into starches. Sweet corn genes encode defective copies of enzymes that convert sugar into starch. Students design and implement their own experiment to test the effect of seed reserves on germination and seedling growth using starchy, sweet, and super-sweet corn seeds.
