Scientists and Engineers Are FEARLESS

by: Donna Farland-Smith and Julie Thomas

In this lesson, students learn that scientists and engineers are fearless. They read about Eugenie Clark in the book Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist, by Jess Keating. After reading, students use straws to create an appropriately sized shark cage for the shark of their choice: a whale shark, a nurse shark, a tiger shark, or a lemon shark. This book selection highlights the practice of using mathematics and computational thinking, and it includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, and Index.
