Students gather evidence to use to evaluate different views on the nature of matter. Students conduct a lab and compare results to identify patterns that can be used as evidence to inform claims. Observing evidence is also the theme of the video associated with this lesson as high school teacher Kristin Mayer encourages students make observations while mixing water and ethanol. During the discussion, students identify patterns by comparing class data and begin to speculate about what may have caused their observations. This evidence is later used to evaluate the different initial ideas about the nature of matter.
