The development of virtual learning environments holds some interesting possibilities for the future of education. This article discusses the research of a virtual learning environment created for an Entomology class where students create a bug collection. Students are able to meet together online as avatars, and look for bugs for their collection on a virtual farm. The students are also able to dissect and classify the bugs. An interesting point in this article is the discussion of presence. The US military has been developing virtual environment training for a while, and they are interested in the presence of the learner. They have found learner's often feel they were psychologically perceiving themselves as enveloped by and included in the environment.

The software had many depths in it to explore. This type of virtual experience takes away the cost of actually going to a certain place and a makes it perfectly safe to engage in the experience.
