Students are taught and practice learning about and using the metric system from early on in school yet with all that learning and practice, by the time they get to middle school they are still not proficient in that skill. This month’s trade books address the issue recommending two books. Also included in the article are two lessons. The first called “Measuring Pets” where students measure their dog’s tail in dog biscuits for grade K-3. The second lesson for grades 4-6 is called “The History of Measurement” where students explore learn how and why measurement started. Both are written in 5E Learning cycle mode.

This is a great article on how to engage students in a 5E learning cycle lesson on measurement. And while this article is written for and identified as elementary, the activities could be easily modified to reach into the middle grades – especially the sections that were written for grades 4-6. I have done a similar lesson on measurement, but I have not completed a true 5E lesson on this topic. I especially like the elaborate ideas – having the students complete a timeline on the metric system and present their timelines to their classmates. Overall, these are great 5E lessons on measurement that could be easily adapted for higher grade levels.
