This article details the explorations of a group of first-graders as they search their school looking for science-related objects to photograph. Students were encouraged to broaden their ideas of what science is and to take pictures of a wide variety of objects. The author also incorporated Bloom's Taxonomy into the activity and gave examples of questions that could be asked that would satisfy each Bloom's category.

This journal articles describes the explorations of a first grade class as they used cameras to search for science around their school. After taking pictures, the teacher downloaded the photos and added student questions that accompanied the photos. Building on these questions, students began hands-on, inquiry based investigations into rust. In addition information about this activity, the authors also included information on this activity's relation to Bloom Taxonomy, a connection to the NES, and a list of resources.

This article focuses on the first days of school with groups of First-graders. Students using cameras were brought outside and asked to take pictures of "science objects". Their goal was to broaden the students’ perceptions of what science is and at the same time empower them to explore what interested them. The students picture were downloaded into a teacher/student generated power points in which the students asked questions. The goal of the teachers was to help develop and refine the children's questioning skills. Questions then led to investigations. The author provided a very well developed plan for even the youngest student to become focused on. I especially liked the way she provided a clear dialog as to how she developed her students scientific skills. She provided background into Bloom's Taxonomy to support her students acquisition of higher order thinking skills. Even though this article refers to first grade, this article can be modified for many upper grade levels to assist the students in developing questions, designing plans for the inquiries to follow, collecting data, and then extend their observations from hands-on to research based. Quite a powerful little article, especially for early grades.
