I chose to add this journal article to my collection because assessments are such a critical component of the classroom. This article caught my attention because I taught a lesson over living and non-living things in a kindergarten class recently. I was intrigued and wanted to see how I could have improved how I assessed students. Something new I learned from this article was the probes. The formative assessment probes are used to reveal what ideas students bring to their learning before instruction begins as well as the ideas formed throughout the learning. A TEK that would go with this article is K.9A, the student is expected to differentiate between living and non-living things based upon whether they have basic needs and produce offspring. I could use this information to investigate the different levels of understanding about the topic that there is amongst my students and to better help them improve their knowledge of it. Something I agree with in using the formative assessment probes is that students need to be given the opportunity to work in small groups to discuss their ideas before engaging in whole-class discussion. This way students can learn from one another and see others’ perspectives besides their own.
