As a student teacher who is beginning to teach science in a lower grade level, this article mapped out what the engineering design process would be for the higher elementary grades which allows me to adjust my teaching to have my students understand. The engineering design process described is similar to what I am teaching with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). I enjoyed how the article explained the details of the essential features that allowed for the students to complete a real-world task. The task allowed for the students to take on the role of an engineer which I found very helpful to allow for their full understanding of the task at hand. The information in this article will be very useful when I am planning my science lessons for my classroom.

As a student teacher who is learning to teach science to elementary students, this article was very helpful. The process of teaching engineering design that was discussed is similar to what I have been taught as part of a school that uses the next generation science standards. It is helpful to see an outline and examples of this process in an older grade, because from there it can be simplified and applied to lower grade levels as well. This process is something I have been working with throughout the semester and reading more about it has been helpful in my planning of future lessons.
