I agree with the authors of this article that younger students would feel more comfortable "negotiating" with each other rathen than "arguing"! As the authors say..."In negotiation everyone works together to talk about ideas; people are not attacked." The authors clearly explain their reasoning and methods in depth in this article. They even describe a classroom where students held discussions without having to raise their hands to speak!! That is sure a change from the norm!

This article details ideas for getting students to have a voice in the classroom and how to get other students to respect those points. The article also differentiates between the idea of argumentation and negotiation, stating that in this case, students are presenting their ideas with reasons to support their thinking. I thought it was really helpful and I look forward to implementing some of these ideas in my 5th grade classroom.
