In this article the authors emphasize writing and negotiating in science. They use four steps with students...The four negotiation phases are: The four negotiation phases are: •Self-Negotiation: Students write their personal understandings of what they observed during the laboratory activity. • Peer-to-Peer Negotiation: Students share and compare data interpretations in small groups. • Check With the Experts:Students compare their ideas to textbooks or other resources. • Write to Learn: Students individually reflect and write. The authors believe this method enhances students' ability to defend what they are learning in their experiments. It does follow a pattern used in the real world of science.
