This is an excellent example of using cross-curricular lessons to teach students about science. Using tall tales as a launching point, students engage in hands-on activities to help them understand tornadoes. THe article provides ideas for linking tornadoes to literature by reading tall tales and includes ideas for art projects. This is not only a great activity for elementary level teachers, but would also be great for informal educators like after school programs or scout groups.

This is a well-planned 5E project on tornadoes and storm safety. The lesson kicks off from the reading of a Pecos Bill tall tale. Students wonder whether a tornado could be lassoed or if a tornado could create the Grand Canyon. The short unit covers many creative and exciting lessons and includes literature, art, science, creative writing, research skills, and role playing. This would be so much fun to experience that it would be worth the planning.
