Using cartoons as an alternative assessment captures student interest and involves the student in active participation. The author explains three ways to effectively use cartoons as assessments. They can be used to access prior knowledge and conceptions, to monitor student progress and identify any difficulties with learning, and as a tool for measuring student mastery of learning goals. A descriptive rubric is included that can be utilized in any middle school science classroom. As an alternative assessment, cartooning will no doubt excite students to make connections to prior knowledge and to newly acquired concepts.

I have not used this particular method, but always use drawings as described in "Make Learning a Never Ending Story" - the use of graphic explanations in the classroom is possibly the single most effective method of teaching and learning I have ever encountered! Will definitely introduce cartooning as well!
