The article Empowering Sixth-Grade Students through a Climate Change Lesson was full of great ideas to introduce the idea of climate change to middle school students. I believe that climate change is an issue that students need to be aware of, no matter what their parents’ political views are. It’s real, and it’s a major issue effecting our planet more and more every day. The article addressed that climate change could be a very scary issue for children to talk about so it’s important to approach the topic from a science filled and factual point of view.
This article was very informative and helpful for any science teacher’s classroom in my opinion because it gives a step-by-step lesson plan on climate change starting with a “hook,” or a way to engage the students and get them interested in the topic. Then it leads the students in to an “exploring” activity where they are asked to think about their carbon foot-print. There’s even an interactive website for students to use where they can track their carbon foot-print on the Earth, and a place where they can compare their impact to other people in American, among others in the world. The lesson continues with an “extend” and “evaluate” section, and also includes an idea for a reflection/discussion at the end. The lesson plan is full of details and ideas, and is perfect for middle school students.
In the world we live in today, the topic of climate change is extremely important and inevitable to discuss with our students. This article is completely relevant and necessary, and covers the subject of global warming and climate change in a sensitive, yet serious manner. Our students are the future of this planet, so making them aware of not only what climate change is, but how we as humans can reduce our impact and carbon foot-print is, and should be, our job as science teachers.

The article "Empowering Sixth-Grade Students through a Climate Change Lesson" left me very disappointed. There are two sections where there are outdated links. One is the explore section, which included a carbon footprint calculator activity. The website link ran on flash, which no longer works. Secondly, the bulk of the lesson, explore, also has a link that is not found. The link is for a NSTA e-book (which I assume I must purchase) but the link is not active, so I have no idea what I was even supposed to buy. Please update the links for future purchasers of this lesson and also mention that an additional purchase is necessary to fully implement the lesson.
