This is a well written article that provides a pre-assessment for both readers and students, should the teacher decide to use it with their classes, and explanations for each answer. It explains why each item is true or false based on our current understanding of both the Nature of Science and common misunderstandings of the same. I use this quiz with my classes early in the year so that I can identify areas of the NOS that I need to work on during the course of the year. When time allows, I also use it as a post-test so that I can see how successful I have been so that I can make adjustments in lessons for the following year. I recommend this article to anyone who is seeking clarification of NOS without taking a full philosophy of science course - actually all the articles in this issue of the Science Teacher (Nov 2004) are very helpful.
